Director’s Screen Project Continues with Mundane History, Agrarian Utopia and Phuket

Extra Virgin in cooperation with SF Cinema and the independent film community continue this year with the Director’s Screen project, a specialty theatrical distribution initiative for independent arthouse cinema. Striving to introduce more distinctive, thought-provoking titles from Thailand as well as around the world to the local audience, the project reflects the widespread recognition in contemporary Thai cinema in an international arena as evident in the Palme d’Or success of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, also to be released in Thailand this week.

The Director’s Screen project first took off in May 2008 with the releases of 2 Thai films: Aditya Assarat’s 5 Thai national film awards (the Subannahongsa) winner Wonderful Town, and Pimpaka Towira’s The Truth Be Told: The Cases Against Supinya Klangnarong. Following the positive feedback, the second phrase of the project is set to go ahead this year with the release of 3 internationally-acclaimed titles from Thailand.

The 2010 project will launch with Anocha Suwichakornpong’s debut feature Mundane History, winner of 2 best feature film awards at the 2010 International Film Festival Rotterdam (VPRO Tiger Award) and the Transilvania International Film Festival (Transilvania Trophy), as well as heavy international film festivals presence. The film will be released in Bangkok on 5 August 2010 at SFX Cinema, The Emporium.

Next will be Agrarian Utopia by Uruphong Raksasad, a semi-documentary fiction feature exploring the year-long rice farming cycle in northern Thailand amidst the backdrop of the country’s economic, social and political changes. A fixture on the international film festivals circuit, the film is the recipient of UNESCO Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Promotion and Preservation of Cultural Diversity, among many others. The release date is set for 2 September 2010.

Wrapping up the 2010 line-up is the short film Phuket by Aditya Assarat, recent laureate of the Ministry of Culture’s Silpathorn Award. Shot entirely in the namesake resort town, the film stars young Korean heartthrob actress Lim Soo-Jung (I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK and Sorry, I Love You) and legendary Thai actor Sorapong Chatree, and will be screened alongside 2 other shorts by the same director: Boy Genius and The Sigh. The release date will be at 30 September 2010 at the newly reopened SF World cinema, CentralWorld.

All the films in the Director’s Screen project will be theatrically released in an exclusive 4-week run at SF Cinema, with 1 screening everyday at 7PM and additional slots on weekends at 2PM. Tickets are available to purchase at the cinema’s box office. Throughout the release period, there will be special activities hosted every Saturday after the evening screening where the films’ directors will attend to meet and do a Q&A session with the audience.

This year’s Director’s Screen project is supported by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, and with a new technical partner in ACD Network, Singapore. The strengthened commitment and shared vision of all the project’s partners will confirm the longevity of the initiative and more titles are set to be released in the next phrases of the project in the coming year.

สานต่อโครงการ Director’s Screen 2553 กับ เจ้านกกระจอก สวรรค์บ้านนา และ ภูเก็ต

บริษัท เอ็กซ์ตร้า เวอร์จิ้น จำกัด ในความร่วมมือกับ โรงภาพยนตร์ในเครือ เอส เอฟ และกลุ่มบุคลากรในวงการภาพยนตร์อิสระ เดินหน้าสานต่อโครงการไดเรคเตอร์สกรีน (Director’s Screen Project) นำเสนอภาพยนตร์นอกกระแสที่หลากหลาย เป็นที่น่าสนใจและประสบความสำเร็จในระดับนานาชาติ มาจัดฉายเข้าในโรงภาพยนตร์ให้ได้ชมกันอย่างต่อเนื่อง สนองตอบกระแสการตอบรับและความสนใจในผลงานภาพยนตร์อิสระของไทยที่ได้รับการยอมรับในวงกว้างขึ้นบทเวทีโลกในปัจจุบัน ดังเช่นความสำเร็จของภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ ของ อภิชาติพงษ์ วีระเศรษฐกุล ที่ได้รับรางวัลปาล์มทองคำจากเทศกาลภาพยนตร์เมืองคานส์ และเข้าฉายที่ประเทศไทยปลายเดือนมิถุนายนนี้ด้วยเช่นกัน

โดยโครงการ Director’s Screen ได้เริ่มต้นเป็นครั้งแรกในเดือนพฤษภาคม 2551 กับการเข้าฉาย วันเดอร์ฟูล ทาวน์ ของอาทิตย์ อัสสรัตน์ ภาพยนตร์เจ้าของ 5 รางวัลสุพรรณหงส์ทองคำประจำปี และ ความจริงพูดได้ (คดีสุภิญญา) ของพิมพกา โตวิระ โดยจากกระแสตอบรับที่ดีของทั้งผู้ชม สื่อมวลชน และวงการภาพยนตร์ทั้งในและต่างประเทศของโครงการ ในปีนี้จึงดำเนินงานต่อเนื่องด้วยการจัดฉายอีก 3 ภาพยนตร์ไทยคุณภาพที่ได้รับรางวัลจากหลากหลายเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติในรอบปีที่ผ่านมา

เปิดตัวด้วย เจ้านกกระจอก (Mundane History) ภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกของ อโนชา สุวิชากรพงศ์ เจ้าของ 2 รางวัลภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม – VPRO Tiger Award จากเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติร็อตเทอร์ดัม ประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์ และ Transilvania Trophy จากเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติทรานซิลวาเนีย ประเทศโรมาเนียในปีนี้ รวมถึงกับการเข้าร่วมและประกวดชิงรางวัลในอีกหลายเทศกาลทั่วโลก ภาพยนตร์มีกำหนดเข้าฉายในวันที่ 5 สิงหาคม 2553 นี้ ณ โรงภาพยนตร์ SFX Cinema ศูนย์การค้าเอ็มโพเรี่ยม

ตามด้วย สวรรค์บ้านนา (Agrarian Utopia) ของ อุรุพงศ์ รักษาสัตย์ ภาพยนตร์แนวกึ่งสารคดีที่นำเสนอและสะท้อนความงามในวิถีชีวิตกสิกรไทย ที่ได้รับคำชมอย่างล้นหลามจากนักวิจารณ์ทั่วโลก และได้รับรางวัลจากเวทีนานาชาติมากมาย รวมถึงรางวัลพิเศษจากองค์กร UNESCO ในด้านความสำเร็จในการส่งเสริมและรักษาไว้ซึ่งความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมผ่านทางศิลปะภาพยนตร์ จากงาน Asia Pacific Screen Awards ในปีที่ผ่านมา ภาพยนตร์เข้าฉายในระบบดิจิตัล 2K วันที่ 2 กันยายน 2553

และปิดท้ายโครงการในปีนี้ด้วย ภาพยนตร์สั้นเรื่องล่าสุดของ อาทิตย์ อัสสรัตน์ ผู้กำกับเจ้าของรางวัลศิลปาธร สาขาภาพยนตร์ประจำปีนี้ เรื่อง ภูเก็ต นำแสดงโดย อิมโซจุง ดาราสาวชื่อดังชาวเกาหลีจากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK และทีวีซีรี่ย์เรื่อง Sorry, I Love You ร่วมกับ สรพงษ์ ชาตรี หร้อมกับภาพยนตร์สั้นอีก 2 เรื่องของผู้กำกับคนเดียวกัน คือ Boy Genius และ The Sigh เข้าฉายในระบบดิจิตัลวันที่ 30 กันยายน 2553 ที่โรงภาพยนตร์ SF World ต้อนรับการเปิดทำการใหม่อีกครั้งของศูนย์การค้าเซ็นทรัลเวิลด์

โดยภาพยนตร์ทุกเรื่องในโครงการ Director’s Screen จะเข้าฉายแบบ Exclusive เฉพาะที่โรงภาพยนตร์ในเครือ เอส เอฟ ฉายทุกวันรอบ 19:00 น. และวันหยุดเสาร์อาทิตย์ เพิ่มรอบ 14:00 น. จำหน่ายบัตรราคาปกติที่โรง ภาพยนตร์ทุกเรื่องเข้าฉายติดต่อกัน 4 สัปดาห์ และในตลอดช่วงเวลาการฉายของภาพยนตร์แต่ละเรื่องจะมีจัดกิจกรรมพบปะพูดคุยกับผู้กำกับทุกวันเสาร์หลังภาพยนตร์รอบค่ำ

โครงการ Director’s Screen ในปีนี้ ได้รับการสนับสนุนจาก สำนักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม รวมถึงแนวร่วมด้านเทคนิคจากบริษัท ACD Network ประเทศสิงคโปร์ โดยจากความร่วมมือของทุกแนวร่วมดังกล่าว เป็นสัญญาณแสดงความชัดเจนว่าโครงการ Director’s Screen จะยังเดินหน้าดำเนินการอย่างต่อเนื่องต่อไปอีกหลังสิ้นสุดโครงการในครั้งนี้
