Cambodian Documentary Film ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE to be Released in Thailand on 19 May

Award-winning Cambodian/British documentary feature film ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE will be released in cinema in Thailand on 19 May 2011 by independent distributor Extra Virgin.

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the film follows the dedicated and at times personal pursuit of Cambodian journalist Thet Sambath, the co-director of the film along with British filmmaker Rob Lemkin, in his mission to look back and rediscover the truth behind one of the darkest periods in his country’s – and the world’s – history. At the centerpiece of the matter is high-level Khmer Rouge cadre Nuon Chea – aka Pol Pot’s Brother Number Two, who for the first time opened up on camera his testimony of the regime’s devastating atrocities on the killing fields.

Nuon Chea’s trial for crimes against humanity at the United Nations-backed court as one of the last remaining Khmer Rouge leaders is expected to begin this year.

After heavy international presence on the festival circuit throughout 2010, the theatrical release in Thailand will be the first time the film is screened in Southeast Asia outside Cambodia, where it is also the first Cambodian film to be released in Thailand in 40 years.

The film will be on exclusive release at SF World cinema, CentralWorld, as part of Extra Virgin’s Director’s Screen Project of independent films distribution in Thailand. The project is a collaboration with SF Cinema where 2 other Thai films will also be released subsequently: Aditya Assarat’s sophomore outing HI-SO and Sivaroj Kongsakul’s Rotterdam Tiger Award winner ETERNITY. The Thai release of ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE is also supported by Novotel Bangkok Fenix Ploenchit and White Light Studio.

ภาพยนตร์กัมพูชาเรื่อง ศัตรูประชาชน (Enemies of the People) มีกำหนดเข้าฉายในโรง ภาพยนตร์ในเดือนพฤษภาคมนี้ โดยบริษัท เอ็กซ์ตร้า เวอร์จิ้น จำกัด

ผลงานร่วมสร้างของผู้กำกับชาวอังกฤษ ร็อบ เลมกิ้น และนักข่าวชาวเขมร เต็ต สัมบัท ที่แม้จะใช้งานสร้างในรูปแบบของสารคดี แต่วิธีการของการตั้งคำถามในแนวสืบสวนสอบสวน อันมีที่มาจากความไม่เข้าใจถึงเหตุการณ์ในอดีตที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ ประวัติศาสตร์ของการสังหารหมู่ในยุคเขมรแดงของตัวผู้กำกับร่วมคือ เต็ต สัมบัท ทำให้ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ไม่เพียงนำเสนอมุมมองต่อประวัติศาสตร์ในฉบับประชาชน ขยายขอบเขตมากขึ้น อีกทั้งยังสะท้อนภาพของสังคมเขมรในยุคปัจจุบัน ที่พยายามจะเยียวยาบาดแผลในอดีต เพื่อก้าวไปสู่อนาคตของคนรุ่นปัจจุบัน

ศัตรูประชาชน เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์เบื้องหลังความเป็นมาการฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธุ์ของระบอบ เขมรแดง ผ่านบทสัมภาษณ์ของหนึ่งในอดีตผู้นำระดับสูง นวนเจีย ซึ่งเป็นมือขวาของพลพต และเป็นหนึ่งในผู้นำอาวุโสที่เหลืออยู่ ซึ่งปัจจุบันกำลังอยู่ในขั้นตอนเตรียมการไต่สวนคดีอาชญากรสงครามใน ช่วงกลางปี 2554 นี้

ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ศัตรูประชาชน ใช้เวลาสร้างกว่าสิบปี และได้ฉายในเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติต่างๆ ทั่วโลกตลอดปี 2553 รวมถึงได้รับรางวัลมาก มาย อาทิ รางวัล Special Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary จากเทศกาล Sundance Film Festival ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา และรางวัล Best Documentary จาก 2010 British Independent Film Awardsเป็นต้น

ซึ่งจากความร่วมมือของโรงภาพยนตร์ในเครือ เอส เอฟ ภายใต้โครงการจัดจำหน่ายภาพยนตร์อิสระ (Director’s Screen Project) จึงจัด โปรแกรมฉายพิเศษเรื่อง “ศัตรู ประชาชน”ณ โรงภาพยนตร์เอส เอฟ เวิลด์ ซีนีม่า ศูนย์การค้าเซ็นทรัลเวิลด์ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 19 พฤษภาคม 2554 นี้ นอกจากนั้นในปี 2554 บริษัทเอ็กซ์ตร้า เวอร์จิ้น และ โรงภาพยนตร์ในเครือ เอส เอฟ ยังมีโปรแกรมฉายพิเศษสำหรับภาพยนตร์ไทยอีก 2 เรื่อง ได้แก่ เรื่อง ไฮโซ ของอาทิตย์ อัสสรัตน์ และ เรื่อง ที่รัก ของศิวโรจน์ คงสกุล และสำหรับการฉายภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ศัตรูประชาชน ยังได้รับการสนับสนุนจาก โรงแรมโนโว เทล กรุงเทพ ฟีนิกซ์ เพลินจิต และ ไวท์ ไลท์ สตูดิโออีกด้วย
